As a mother of little ones and a doula, I’m always looking for ways to instill values that I pray will stay with my children for a lifetime.

Supporting mothers through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum has shown me that some of the greatest needs are often met through the simplest acts of love. It’s also reminded me that ministry doesn’t just happen within the four walls of a church. Ministry is often found in the ordinary—the mundane, everyday moments. It’s seeing a need and choosing to meet it. It’s noticing someone who could use a little extra love and taking the lead to serve.

One of our favorite things to do together is prepare a meal for a mama in need. As my children stir, pour, and help in the kitchen, they’re learning something far more important than how to cook. They’re learning compassion. They’re learning generosity. They’re learning that loving our neighbors requires action.

As a doula, I get the privilege of walking alongside mothers during one of the most vulnerable seasons of their lives. I want my children to see that caring for others doesn’t stop when I come home—it becomes part of how we live as a family.

These moments teach us to take our eyes off ourselves and look for ways to be a blessing. Because ministry isn’t reserved for Sunday mornings—it’s woven into everyday life when we’re willing to serve. Sometimes, it looks like showing up for a laboring mother. Sometimes, it looks like delivering a warm meal to a postpartum mama. And sometimes, it looks like little hands helping in the kitchen, learning that love is something we do.

This is the kind of legacy I hope to leave my children: hearts that notice, hands that serve, and lives that reflect the love of Christ, one simple act of kindness at a time. 🤍

As a mom of four littles, some days are just hard.

Today was one of those days.

Someone once told me that when you’re struggling, take your eyes off yourself and do something for someone else. So instead of reaching for my phone and getting lost in the scroll, I packed gifts for our Mama Bear mamas.

POV: You’re making one of the most comforting postpartum soups ever. 🧡🥣

Creamy kabocha squash, red lentils, warming cumin, and a rich broth blended into silky perfection. Inspired by the nourishing wisdom in “The First Forty Days.”

Serves 8:

3 Tbs sesame oil
1/2 white or yellow onion, roughly chopped
1/2 shallot, roughly chopped
1 medium kabocha squash (peeled and cut into small cubes)
1 tsp cumin
1 Tbs curry powder
2 quarts vegetable broth
2 cups red lentils
2 tsp soy sauce
2 Tbs nutritional yeast (optional)

Warm the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and shallot and lightly brown them. Add the squash, cumin and curry powder and lightly sauté for 5 minutes.

Reduce heat to low and add the broth. Bring to a boil. Cover the pot and let it cook for 40 min. Add the lentils and cook an additional 10-15 minutes until the lentils are tender.

Let the soup slightly cool then blend into a purée. Season with soy sauce and nutritional yeast and enjoy!

Save this for soup season and share with a new mama who deserves a nourishing meal.✨

So often, we are taught to fear things that feel difficult. But difficulty is not a sign that something is wrong. Sometimes, it is a sign that something powerful is happening within us.

When the doubts creep in and the weight of the journey feels heavy, surround yourself with women who will remind you of your strength. Build a support system that keeps you grounded, encouraged, and confident in your body’s ability to do what it was designed to do.

Birth is hard. Motherhood is hard. Growth is hard. But hard does not equal bad.

The intensity of labor is temporary. The sensations of childbirth are not something to fear—they are part of the sacred process of bringing your baby earthside and being transformed into a mother.

You are not meant to walk this journey alone. Lean into your support, trust the process, and remember: every wave brings you closer to meeting your baby and becoming the mother you were created to be.

With all three of my previous pregnancies, I delivered early. So naturally, when I became pregnant with my fourth, I expected the same. By the time April rolled around, I was more than ready to meet my baby. My due date was April 28, but I was convinced there was absolutely no way I would carry until then. I prepared as though I would deliver in the middle of April, and each night I wondered if that would be the night labor began.

The circumstances surrounding this pregnancy were complicated, and I was praying that the Lord would allow me to go into labor during specific dates on the calendar. I fully trusted that He would answer those prayers, but I never imagined how beautifully everything would unfold.

This was the first pregnancy in which I experienced prodromal labor. To say it was discouraging would be an understatement.
My first bout began at 35 weeks and 2 days. In total, I endured six different nights of prodromal labor before true labor finally started.

On April 12, we were convinced it was the real thing. I was awake most of the night, and my husband even began preparing our room for delivery. Then everything stopped.
I felt as though the Lord was telling me to stop trying to force things and instead trust His perfect timing.

After I reached 39 weeks, I decided to completely surrender the timing of delivery and trust that our daughter would come when she was meant to. I knew my body wasn’t broken, although there were moments when I wondered if labor would ever begin. Many nights, I lay in bed listening to @christianhypnobirthing recordings to calm my mind. When I reached 39 weeks and 3 days, I had officially carried longer than I had with any of my previous pregnancies. (Continued in Comments)

The final stretch of pregnancy can feel like a world of its own—where time slows down, emotions run deep, and the mental load can feel heavier than the physical. This is the longest I’ve ever carried, and it’s stretching me in ways I didn’t expect.

There’s so much noise at the end—well-meaning questions, timelines, expectations. But I keep coming back to this truth: my body was made for this. And this baby already has a birthday… we’re just waiting for it to be revealed in perfect timing.

Learning to surrender.

Recently, I was accused of not being in this work for the right motive.

And I’ll be honest — that one stung.

Because doula work isn’t a trend for me. It isn’t about recognition. It isn’t about anything surface-level. This is a calling. A surrender. A “yes” I gave to God when He placed a deep burden on my heart for mamas who feel unseen, unheard, or alone.

Through Mama Bear Doula Care, I show up because I believe no woman should have to walk pregnancy, birth, or postpartum without steady, compassionate support. I show up because ministry doesn’t only happen in church buildings — sometimes it happens in hospital rooms, living rooms, and in the quiet hours of the night when a mama just needs someone to say, “You’re doing amazing.”

My motive is simple: to serve well. To love well. To advocate well.
