Breastfeeding is a beautiful, natural experience, but let's be honest—it's also a skill that takes time, practice, and a whole lot of love! Here are five key areas that can make a huge difference in your journey:
1. 🌿 Environment: Set the Scene
Create a calm, supportive space. Dim the lights, grab a water bottle, and have snacks and books/phone nearby. A comfortable chair and good support pillows are essential. Minimizing distractions helps both you and your baby focus on the connection.
2. ✨ Technique: Latch is Everything
A proper latch prevents pain and ensures your baby gets enough milk. Look for a wide-open mouth and ensure the baby takes in a good amount of the areola (not just the nipple). Experiment with different positions (cradle, cross-cradle, football hold, side-lying) to find what works best for you both! When in doubt, seek guidance from a lactation consultant.
3. ⏰ Frequency: Follow the Cues
Forget the clock, and watch your baby! Newborns typically feed 8-12 times in 24 hours. Cluster feeding (frequent, short feeds) is normal, especially in the evenings or during growth spurts. Respond to early hunger cues like rooting, lip-smacking, or moving hands to the mouth.
4. 💖 Self-Care: Nurture the Nurturer
You can't pour from an empty cup! Breastfeeding requires a lot of energy. Prioritize hydration, nutritious meals, and rest. Schedule a few minutes each day for yourself, whether it's a quick shower, a nap, or just five minutes of silence. You are doing an amazing job.

This is arguably the most important insight. Breastfeeding is a learned dance for both mother and baby. The first few weeks can be challenging as you build your supply and work out the kinks. I recently supported a mama who was told she needed a c-section because her baby was estimated to be too big.
➡️ No ECV was offered for her breech baby
➡️ When baby flipped on her own, they still pushed for a c-section
➡️ She chose to be induced instead
➡️ After 3 days, she gave birth vaginally to a perfectly healthy 8 lb 1 oz baby 💪🏼

Today I packed up my pump — maybe for the last time — and my heart is full of all the feels.

This marks the end of a chapter I never could have fully prepared for: my pumping journey.
Thousands of hours.
Thousands of ounces.
So many quiet (and not-so-quiet) moments spent tethered to a machine while life carried on around me.

This journey stretched me — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. What once felt like it would last forever turned out to be just a season. A hard, beautiful, giving, exhausting, powerful season.

I pumped through fatigue. I pumped through joy. I pumped through tears. I pumped not just for my own little one, but also in honor of the many babies who needed donor milk — and for the parents who hoped someone, somewhere, might help lighten their load.

I never imagined how deeply milk donation would shape me. Each ounce came with love, with sacrifice, and with a deep respect for the bodies that feed, nurture, and give.

If you’re in the thick of it — middle-of-the-night pumps, washing parts on repeat, navigating supply stress, or riding the emotional rollercoaster — I see you. This work matters. Your devotion matters.
