Erin Hughes

Postpartum Doula

I like to tell new parents never say “I will never…” when it comes to parenting. Just as every baby is unique, every pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience is unique as well. I believe there is no single right way to parent. There are countless ways, all equally and perfectly imperfect. As a postpartum doula, my role is to guide families through the transition into parenthood and help them build confidence as they find their own rhythm. I provide support, education, and practical guidance in newborn care, babywearing, sibling transitions, infant development, feeding, postpartum mood and anxiety support, and sleep routines. I am also a childbirth and infant care educator and trained in Spinning Babies comfort measures used during pregnancy and birth. My clients often describe me as calm, reassuring, and a good listener.

Originally from Indiana, I began my career in science. I studied pre veterinary medicine at Purdue University before transferring to the University of Maryland where I earned a BS in Biology. I later completed a Master of Science in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University and spent nearly a decade working as a regulatory scientist in bioethics, science policy, and regulatory affairs alongside the FDA and biotechnology companies in the Washington, DC area.

After becoming a parent to two daughters, I discovered where my true strengths and passions lie. My own birth experiences and the support of a birth doula during the birth of my second child inspired me to leave the corporate world and pursue work supporting families. I became a DONA trained birth and postpartum doula and childbirth educator so I could help empower parents with support, guidance, and education during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. I strongly believe in meeting children where they are developmentally and recognizing how capable they are from the very beginning.
